Engaging children with ArtScience to
explore the world’s most extreme environments

Project: EXTREMES
Exploring extreme environments with a focus on science and education for children.
EXTREMES, UiT University Tromsø, Norway

What are Extreme Environments?
Extreme environments are special places on Earth (and even beyond!) where living is really tough. But some animals and tiny plants or microbes have learned special tricks to survive there!

These extreme places can be found, for example, in the deep sea, where no sunlight reaches and it is extremely cold. Living around volcanoes can also be very challenging because it is very hot and volcanoes are powerful and sometimes dangerous. The same goes for living near glaciers, where everything is covered in ice and temperatures can be around -20°C or even colder.

So, living near or in these environments is tricky, but it also teaches us a lot about how our Earth works!

I created three little characters, Eldur, Siku, and Bunn, who represent these extreme places and will share stories with children about their surroundings and the environment.

Note: This project is still in its early
stages and will be updated over the coming months

Together with environmental anthropologist Ann Eileen Lennert from the Extremes project, we created a comic that reflects on the deep connections between humans, a living planet, and its many ecosystems.

The comic was developed aboard the research vessel Kronprins Haakon in Norway, and it explores these themes together with happenings from
daily life at sea.
